Five-Spotted Hawk Moth - Manduca sexta

Five-Spotted Hawk Moth - Manduca sexta
Piney Point, Manatee County, Florida, USA

Manduca sexta
Looks like the Carolina Sphinx (M. sexta) to me... (http://bugguide.net/node/view/3244) Most of the "Tomato Hornworms" I've reared out in the East have actually been M. sexta, not the "true" tomato hornworm, M. quinquemaculata. M. quinquemaculata is a lighter moth with better-defined lines on the forewings.

i suspect
its a little battered but try this:
Five-spotted Hawk Moth - Manduca quinquemaculata
(when he was a kid he liked tomatos)
