Identification

Det. E. G. Riley, 1998
This species was often found misidentified in collections as P. intricatus or P. picturatus. It cannot be reliably distinguished from P. deceptor except by examination of the male genitalia. On average, however, there is a tendency for the overall size to be smaller and for the yellow markings on the body and legs to be more extensive, but these differences are not definitive. (1)
Range
MO-SC-ME-MI, range overlaps some w/ P. deceptor in the west (1)
See Also
Most specimens of P. deceptor received on loan were consistently misidentified as P. m-nigrum, and, indeed, this new species is externally indistinguishable from that species.
On average, however, there is a tendency for the overall size of P. deceptor to be a little larger and for the yellow markings on the body and legs to be more reduced; however, these differences are not definitive. (1)
