Beetle Looked Like A Bumble Bee - Nicrophorus tomentosus

Beetle Looked Like A Bumble Bee - Nicrophorus tomentosus
Springfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
July 1, 2009
Size: 17.5mm
Bill was cleaning up the dog dung in the yard when he saw this beetle in the grass. Bill was trying to grab it and the beetle was trying to go underground. In the excitement and as everyone was moving around I thought it was a bumble bee and was telling Bill to be careful. Hah, fooled me. Once captured I could see that it was a beetle. I am 99% sure that this is Nicrophorus tomentosus but I have never seen one before and want to be 100% sure. Thanks!!

I agree...
with N. tomentosus; the hairy pronotum is distinctive for this species.

Nicrophorus sp.
oh - I see you knew the genus. Not sure about your eastern (or mid-western) spp.
