Aphid - Aphis nerii

Aphid - Aphis nerii
Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
June 30, 2009
Would anyone be able to explain the red spheres that are attached to this Oleander Aphid? Quite a few other aphids, in this group, had them, too. I've never seen them before. They appear to be solid. I forst thought they were a liquid secretion, but being solid, I'm curious if anyone has seen these before. Thanks.

Moved from Aphids. The spheres are a defensive secretion--see Wikipedia.
