Ichneumon unknown sp - Megarhyssa nortoni - Female
Forks, Olympic National Park/Temperate Rain Forest County, Washington, USA
July 5, 2009
Size: 3.5in (9cm)
Found her stuck in the Ice Cream shop where I took my kids after the 4th of July parade. They agreed to stay open long enough for me to pedal home on my bike to get my net and capture box. She spent the night in the refrigerator and took her out to the rubarb for a good photo background as she warmed up. She took off none the worse for wear it seems. My kids really enjoyed the event.

Moved
Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

Yes...
Jon, this is M. nortoni, and can be moved there.

See reference here.

Megarhyssa.
I stongly suspect this is a species of Megarhyssa. I think M. nortoni is the only one in the Pacific Northwest, but I'm not positive. Individual specimens can vary greatly in size. If the total length including the ovipositor was 3 inches, then this is a small one.

Many Thanks
Thanks for the ID. I took other photos with my ruler in the shot. 3.5 inches included the ovipositor. I'll check out the hosts this species uses.
