Banded Hairstreak - Satyrium calanus

Banded Hairstreak - Satyrium calanus
Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, USA
July 5, 2009
Size: ~4 cm wingspan
Visiting flowers on butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) in grassy old field. Compared to other skittish butterflies that would fly away at my approach or movement, this one was very "tame" and remained on the flower constantly. Its wings were continuously folded up over its back as it foraged, never flexing them open and closed.

Banded Hairstreak - Satyriam calanus
Very similar to, and possibly is, a Kings hairstreak - Satyrium kingi but, I think the blue spot indicates banded.

Thanks
Thanks for your two assists today on the Banded Hairstreak and Pearly Crescent, Brian!
