Spiky Orange Larva

Spiky Orange Larva
Mason Neck State Park, Lorton, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
July 5, 2009
There were a number of these hanging out on tall blade-like leaves (cattails or irises or something) at the edge of a pond, not moving. What will this turn into? They were larger than ladybug larvae.

Moved
Moved from Beetles.

Wondering...
was it previously this:

And will it become this:

?

must be a tortoise beetle larva [Cassidini]
Ashley--
you know, it's better not to leave [first] comments on your own posts; instead, 'edit' and include whatever you wanna add into 'Remarks' -- otherwise people go thru recent pix, see your thumb and "1 comment" below -- and skip it assuming that somebody already told you what your bug is. just psychology.

Ah, I didn't know that
thanks for the explanation. I don't hang out in "Recent", so I'm not too familiar with how it works there. I wanted to add mine as a reply so that I could include the thumbs, but I guess they could have just as well been links.

So, tortoise beetle? I looked at that group, and didn't know there were so many different forms; I thought they all had the clear edges. I'll have to keep an eye out for more beetles whenever I go back.

A Different Take...
Interesting observation, =v=. I've found that, after a new post sits uncommented a couple days, a comment will sometimes generate interest. However, I have no experience in immediately making a comment on a post. (I've never done an initial comment on my own stuff.)

Also good to know, thanks.
I haven't even tried, just assumed it wouldn't work - does the "thumb" tag work in the original commentary field?

absolutely
and many people jam-pack their remarks with thumbs from all over the place in a desperate attempt to cover all the ID options...
from indirect observations, most experts check BG in Recent mode

Again, interesting
Over the last couple days, I learned from several experts that they go right to their category (say, Flies), then recent images. This will make a big difference in how/where I post.

Ron--
this exact matter is being currently discussed at node/view/296779 and node/view/298899

Good to know -
thanks again!
