Rahasus sp. - Rasahus hamatus

Rahasus sp. - Rasahus hamatus
Belle Chasse, Buddhist Temple, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, USA
June 12, 2009
Size: 18mm
Attracted to blacklight. We were looking for Triatoma sanguisuga, which we found in abundance, but we also found several other cool assassins.

This is...
Rasahus hamatus

Thanks
I had tried to find an ID on my own, and found a key but I seem to recall that there was something subtle or tricky that thwarted me. Do you mind telling me what diagnostic feature tipped you off to the species?

No problem
Of the four species known from the United States, R. hamatus and R. biguttatus are the only two known east of TX. Additionally, R. thoracicus is overall reddish in color and R. scutellaris is a mexican species with the large orange membrane spot outside of the discal cell.

The difference between R. hamatus and biguttatus (which can be found on the Info pages) is that in biguttatus, the orange color extends along the lateral (costal) border of the forewings. In hamatus, it is black. Compare other photos in the guide to see this difference.
