Very slick looking (garden?) spider - Argiope aurantia

Very slick looking (garden?) spider - Argiope aurantia
Belle Chasse, Buddhist Temple, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, USA
June 12, 2009
This spider had also made its web on the furry trunk of a palm tree. I'm presuming from the zigzag landing strip that it's related to the garden spider, is that correct? It wasn't very large, but I don't have a good estimate of size. Maybe around a centimeter.

Again, sorry for the glare, it was a night-shot with flash. Is there a better way to set up this sort of photo, short of big lamps or external flash setups?

Yes,
young Argiope aurantia

Thanks
That's neat that the coloration and body shape are so different in the juvenile.
