Velvet Ant - Pseudomethoca spp? - Pseudomethoca simillima - female

Velvet Ant - Pseudomethoca spp? - Pseudomethoca simillima - Female
Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, USA
June 14, 2009
Size: ~8-10 mm
I found this Velvet Ant on a Box Elder (Acer negundo) sapling. I didn't even realize that it was a Velvet Wasp until looking at BugGuide images. Can it be ID'd down to species?

Captured and Chilled
Hi Eric! I captured and chilled her for about 10 minuntes, then put her in the vial cap (bright white background) and fired off a bunch of photos! These are greatly enlarged and cropped. And, yes, she did warm up quickly!

Pseudomethoca simillima
The small "teeth" on the propodeum and shapes of the head and thorax ID this as P. simillima.

Thanks, George
Thanks for the quick ID.
