Robber Fly - Laphria

Robber Fly - Laphria
Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
July 9, 2009
Size: large

grossa?
Looks like this could be a male grossa as well. I believe the northeastern populations can show substantial yellow in front of the wings. It looks quite large. I suppose champlainii is also a contender.

Laphria genus robberfly
I don't think it's the same species, but here's one I found in the same genus. Had another huge one buzz me recently, but didn't hang out for photo session. They seem a little clumbsy to me, but apparently get the job done.

Thanks Andy
