Velvet Ant
This is a male wasp in the family Mutillidae. We've a few experts that may be able to identify it further.

 
Nocturnal genus
This belongs to one of the nocturnal genera. They're difficult to identify even under a microscope (for me at least). Kevin is our expert, he will almost certainly be able to narrow it down.
