Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera

Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera
Henryetta, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, USA
September 1, 2005
Size: aprox. 60mm

Acrididae.
I know, I'm being a coward:-) The size given indicates Dissosteira, but that may not be what this is (no notch in pronotum). This great image does show the "hot-footing" behavior of some acridids, where they lift their hind feet off of a hot surface. I have also seen them alternate the front and middle feet on opposite legs to get relief:-) Very cute.

grasshopper
The size is an estimate it could of been 55mm, it was a big robust grasshopper.
When it flew I did not notice any color in the wing. I will keep my eye out for it again.
Thanks

Assigning to Arphia xanthoptera.
The high pronotal crest really doesn't leave too much room for doubt, but the hind wings in flight should have been a rich yellow.
