Resaca Arctiid cat - Lophocampa annulosa

Not completely sure whether this cat is a Halysidota (probably H. schausi) or a Lophocampa (most likely L. annulosa). Photographed during the park's grand opening ceremony, early last December, at one of the decks overlooking the resaca (a.k.a. oxbow lake).

Melancholy to see my comment here from a few years ago, quoting Knudson and Bordelon, just a few days after hearing that Ed Knudson had passed away. Charles Bordelon preceded him by a few years. But they left behind a great legacy in their Texas Lepidoptera Survey book series...

L. annulosa?
Bordelon and Knudson (1) list annulosa as the only species of Lophocampa in the LRGV. "Very common in the valley, but rare northward. This is one of the smallest species in the genus. There are many similar species in Mexico and Central America." They only deal with adult moths though, I do not think they look at larvae very much...
