Lady beetle at eclose - Day 18 - Harmonia axyridis
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 12, 2009
Size: 7 mm
Eclose occurred 5 days after pupation. The black and white head and pronotum had their final color and pattern at the moment of eclose. The pattern of the elytra (wing covers) was also immediately evident - the very pale patches later became dark spots. It took another 4 hours for the elytra to harden and darken.
The pupa is attached to an index card with glue, because I accidentally dislodged it from its leaf and wanted to anchor it in case that was necessary for eclose. Only the shed larval "skin" at the rear of the pupa contacted the glue, so as not to damage the pupa or the adult inside.
