Milbert's Tortoiseshell - Aglais milberti

Milbert's Tortoiseshell - Aglais milberti
Licking County, Ohio, USA
September 2, 2005
Size: 5cm
I didn't see a guide page for this fella so I'll dump him (or her) into Nymphalis for now.

This shot barely does justice to the dorsal view they present. Those 'cat eyes' are stunning. Hopefully I can get a better one before they disappear for the season, but I'll settle for getting ANY shot of them away from these non-native flowers.

becoming less common?
Funny, I thought I made a guide page when posting one of last year's shots this March, but apparently not. I'll make one now and move the images there.
I've also had difficulty getting close to these guys in the past; they seem to be wary and flighty, and not as common as they were ten to twenty years ago.
Stunning is right - beautiful colors!
