Frozen Aeshna - which species? - Aeshna umbrosa

Frozen Aeshna - which species? - Aeshna umbrosa
Raleigh, near Rts 50 and US 70, Wake County, North Carolina, USA
December 18, 2004
Found this dragonfly frozen outside this morning. As time passed the eyes became cloudy. Are these photos good enough to determine species and sex? Which species are found in NC?

looks more like an Aeshna
Dark abdomen and stripes on the thorax instead of solid green.

Aeshna sp.
Yes, of course. The species are confusing to me. The claspers seem like a male of Aeshna constricta, but I don't find an exact match for the markings in the species photos. Does range to NC help narrow down the species? This specimen was found 100 yards from a creek.

probably Shadow (A. umbrosa)
The late date is good and it appears to be the only Aeshna in North Carolina away from the mountains. Claspers look good and the thoracic pattern seems close.

Aeshna umbrosa
Thanks. Where do I find the range within North Carolina for species of dragonflies?
