That's most likely a -male- cicada killer guarding the roost. Nice shots!

This guy is spectacular. I have been hoping to get a pic of him for 2 weeks. Very cooperative today... worth the wait

near nest site
You're probably near a nesting site with the male being territorial. Watch for ones flying near the ground, especially with a cicada in tow, the females. You might get some cool shots there too.

 
Thanks for the advice.
There are two of them in the yard and this one keep coming back to this same post. This was the first I had seen him land. Last year, I thought I saw them go underground.
