Squash bug egg mass - Anasa tristis

Squash bug egg mass - Anasa tristis
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 13, 2009
Size: 1.5 mm
The entire egg mass is less than half an inch long (10 mm). All the squash bug egg masses I saw on the plant were positioned like this, at the juncture of two leaf veins (underside of the leaf).

These orange, pearlescent eggs are about a day away from hatch. They'll become darker, redder, and more translucent as hatch approaches.

Plant: Summer squash (Cucurbita pepo)
