Many of these red ants were walking on a rock at the summit of Monument Mountain.

We can at least say with some certainty, based on the clypeus that is not notched and is rather high in the center and steep-sided, that it is not part of the sanguinea group. Looks a lot like obscuriventris, but I can't see the diagnostic bristles on the hind tibiae

Thatching ants
These are in the genus Formica. Pretty much need the specimen to get to species.
