Frit Fly - Thaumatomyia grata

Frit Fly - Thaumatomyia grata
Dixville, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
July 14, 2009
Size: 2.7mm

Moved
Moved from Thaumatomyia.

Resembles Thaumatomyia grata
Resembles Thaumatomyia grata but that species is smaller.

What size range does T. grata fall into?
The UNH site list 4 species of Thaumatomyia: annulata, glabra, grata and pulla.

Size
T. grata is "2.5-2.75 mm" without specification for what part is that size. It is primarily a northern species but northern New Hampshire is plausibly within its range.

Size corrected
John, I went back in my original files and when I remeasured, it came out to 2.7mm. After I photograph the insect, I photograph a mm ruler.

Two more
The others from Dixville should be the same species. Solid black mesonotum (not striped) and long, narrow black triangle on head with straight edges.

Moved
Moved from Frit Flies. Spectacular image! One can clearly see the tibial organ on the hind tibia which is one of the diagnostic characters for the genus. Rock on!
