orange-striped oakworms - Anisota senatoria

orange-striped oakworms - Anisota senatoria
Mableton, Cobb County, Georgia, USA
August 22, 2005
Size: about 2 inches
Orange-striped oakworms covered the small tree eating away, what happened to these? I understand they pupate in the ground, these don't really look like they are still alive, they look like empty husks. They covered a couple of branches in clusters.

Exuviae?
Could simply be shed "skins," leftover from molting? They sure did defoliate that tree!
