Size: ~25mm
Observed several, apparently feeding on the remains of Palamedes Swallowtails next to the skeleton of a snake. Appears to be a gold and brown rove.

No.
The rove beetle eating the butterfly is Platydracus maculosus, one of the largest of our staphylinid fauna. Jim's pic is of Ontholestes cingularis.

 
Right. I should have checked.
I knew it was a little different -- not as striking in the golden tail department.
