Synonyms and other taxonomic changes

Eudryas unio – (Hübner, [1831]

Explanation of Names

Species name unio is Latin for "onion" or "large pearl". The latter seems to be the context. (Based on Internet searches.)

Size

Wingspan 26-35 mm (1)

Identification

Adult: dark band along outer margin of forewing is scalloped on the inside.

Range

Eastern and central North America

Habitat

usually found near marshy areas where both Epilobium and cattails (Typha) grow together.

Season

This species is univoltine with a partial second generation on Block Island, RI, flying mainly June and early July but with records as late as mid-September.(2)

Food

Larvae feed on Evening-primrose, grapes, other herbs.
