Heleomyzid in California - Suillia barberi

Heleomyzid in California - Suillia barberi
Webb Canyon , ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
February 27, 2009
I'll admit that I haven't done any research yet on what this fly might be -- just thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone could give me a good lead to follow. I thought that the pattern on the wings and the head were somewhat distinctive...

Photographed in shade on a rock in front of my neighbor's house (adjacent to a horse pasture). Surrounding habitat is chaparral and mixed oak.

No doubt !

You've made me extremely happy!
Thank you so much for reviewing my image, Andrzej, and providing me with a species ID! I only wish I had been able to take more images of this very interesting fly. Hopefully they'll be another opportunity for me in the future...

Superb!
Thanks, Joel, for confirming the ID. Glad I was on the right track and also managed to learn a fair bit about Heleomyzidae (a new family for me!) in the process.

Hmmm... Is Heleomyzidae a possibility?
Still need to do some more poking around, but I think some of the characteristics of my fly match up with those listed in the Identification section here.
