This leaf has an interesting pattern drawn on it. I've seen lines like this before, but don't know what makes them.

leaf mining
Looks to me like the common aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaf miner, Phyllocnistis populiella. We're going on a 3-5 year outbreak here in Alaska across interior and south-central.

Thanks for the ID
Hope the outbreak isn't too bad up there.

Flies also do that
For example flies of the family Agromyzidae are known leaf miners.
Indeed it is possible (that is, when you're an expert :-))) to determine the species from the mining pattern!

Leaf mining
The larva of many insects are
leaf miners
, including some of the Buprestids you have a talent for photographing (Brachys, etc.). The host and 'pattern' are usually diagnostic.

Thanks
for the info. It appears that both beetles and flies do this leaf graffiti. I'm not sure where it would belong in the guide, if at all.
