velvet ant? - Dasymutilla

Size: approx 1 inch
For some reason this doesn't feel right for a velvet ant. Any thoughts or suggestions of where to look?

Moved from ID Request.

Dasymutilla sp.
Almost all the eastern Dasymutilla males have this color pattern (10+ species), and usually cannot be identified from a photo.

Male velvet ant.
This is indeed a male velvet ant. Not sure of genus.

Mydas Flies (Mydidae)?
Does not look like a velvet ant to me.
Just an opinion.
Wait for an "official" ruling.
