Aphaenogaster picea

Aphaenogaster picea
Rancocas Woods, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
July 19, 2009
My nephew found these under a rock and wanted to know what they are. Didn't get great pictures because he wasn't willing to hold the rock very long! ;-)

For now...
Aphaenogaster picea. This morphological "species" is actually two distinct populations with different chromosome numbers. Until someone publishes a revision, safe to call this one picea. Note the pitch-like (piceous, i.e. blackish brown) body color and yellowish brown legs and antennal tips.

Thanks!
I look forward to updates on the revision.
