Poison Ivy Leaf Gall Mite for Sept. in NJ - Aculops rhois
Corson's Inlet, Ocean City, Cape May County, New Jersey, USA
September 21, 2008
Corson's Inlet is a protected dune habitat on the Atlantic coast, where the poison ivy is allowed to grow uncontrolled. (The berries are an important food source for overwintering birds.) I was happy to see that the itch-inducing leaves are a food source for these gall mites.
