Short-winged Green Grasshopper - Dichromorpha viridis - male - female

Short-winged Green Grasshopper - Dichromorpha viridis - Male Female
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
September 3, 2005
Size: 15 mm (M), 23 mm (F)
This mating pair was found in my yard. I captured them and kept them chilled, because they were prone to jump off at the approach of a camera. They remained coupled overnight and were very cooperative photographic subjects.

I'm posting several images to show some identification characteristics. Note the short wings and the coloration in this lateral view. Female coloration is usually uniform, either brown or green (here). Males have two common color forms, green on upper surface and brown on sides (here), or light brown upper surface and dark brown sides. (1) (2)
