Some weird bee? - Hemaris thysbe
Southfield, Southern Oakland County, Michigan, USA
July 20, 2009
Size: Approx 1.75" to 2" long
This was flying around my flowers and appeared to be gathering pollen like a bee.

Moved from ID Request.

7853 - Hemaris thysbe
Hemaris diffinis has much black visible on undersides. (no rsvp, thanks)

Thanks to everyone for your help!
WOW! Everyone has been so helpful and responded so quickly. Thanks again.

I agree with Charlene, Hemaris species clearwing moth.

Here's one I found, Hemaris diffinis, snowberry clearwing. Yours could be that or Hemaris thysbe. I think you need a top down shot to really tell. Both occur in Michigan.

beautiful!
I don't see these enough! It looks like a moth in the family Sphingidae...maybe a "hummingbird moth" genus Hemaris? :-)
