So interesting!
The riders seem to like to stay within the yellow spots of the beetle. The same thing happens in
Jim's pictures
of these beetles and mites.

Awesome!
What an awesome image! These are "phoretic" mites, meaning they are only hitching a ride. They will disembark at a carcass and begin feeding on fly eggs, reducing the beetle's competition for carrion.

Mite travelers
Oddly, someone else sent me the exact image combination of beetle and passenger yesterday from Ohio. Previously I had never seen an image of these mites but I think if you find carrion beetles then they are common riders.
