Size: body approx. 3 in. long
Located on a tree trunk at eye level approx 5 feet from a river. The insect was still (no movement) and didn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Andy's right
This is the evacuated pellicle of a Pteronarcys stonefly nymph. These giant stoneflies are also known as Salmonflies.

It kind of looks like it could have been a stonefly larva with the twin tails. This is just the leftover skin after it changed into an adult.
