mosquito - Aedes vexans - Female
Amhersburg, Essex, Ontario, Canada
September 6, 2005
Size: 5-7mm approx
These are very common in my yard right now. Be sure to click on the photo to see a slightly larger version. Can anybody ID this mosquito?

Thanks,

Russ

Aedes
vexans. pretty easy to tell from the side of the abdomen.

Aedes
Looks like an Aedes of some sort. Beyond that, specimen in hand, with a scope and a key is the best way to go.
Note that the major entomological journals have weighed in on Aedine names. A summary cane be found here: http://www.entsoc.org/pubs/Periodicals/JME/mosquito_name_policy.htm.

Name
I meant of course, Aedes in the broad sense, i.e. pre-Reinert.
