A Real Beauty - Homalodisca vitripennis

A Real Beauty - Homalodisca vitripennis
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 23, 2009
Size: 3/8 to 1/2 inch
Found in sunny meadow area.
I was hoping to find an adult spittle bug.
But reading about them I think it is probably a leaf hopper.
See the row of spikes on the tibia on the second image.

Thanks for all the fast responses.
Maybe beauty is as beauty does.
Seems like they pass on a lot of plant diseases as they suck plant juices.

It took me awhile to find out why "sharpshooter".
From Wikipedia:
"Both nymphs and adults filter a huge volume of dilute liquid through their digestive system to extract the trace nutrients, and much of the water and carbohydrates are squirted forcibly away from the body in a fine stream of droplets, thus earning them their common name."

Sharpshooter
