Zelus nymphs emerging - Zelus

Zelus nymphs emerging - Zelus
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
July 23, 2009
This egg case was on the back of an oak leaf which I had collected for another reason. Checking the leaf this afternoon I was surprised to see all these nymphs which were just in the process of emerging. The nymphs showed no interest in the aphid.

Fantastic image!
How large would you estimate that the nymphs were at the time of hatching?

Zelus nymphs
The nymphs were about 4mm or so in length when fully emerged. They seemed to stretch out as they pulled themselves from the cases. When I first noticed them emerging there were seven that had emerged and after an hour a total of 14 had emerged. After that I just placed the case in my garden. Except for one adventurous one who wandered all over the container the rest of them all stayed around the case.
