Skipper Fly - Protopiophila latipes
Horner Park, Richmond Hill (N43º52'20"W079º24'45"), York Region, Ontario, Canada
May 21, 2009
Size: 2.8 mm
Protopiophila latipes (Meigen, 1838). Attracted to carrion bait. Identified using the key to Piophilidae in the Manual of Nearctic Diptera and the reference collection at Guelph. The other species in this genus, P. litigata, is known as the antler fly, and was described from specimens collected from moose antlers. It differs from latipes in having the femorae and metatibiae dark medially and pale basally and apically.

Moved
Moved from Cheese skippers and kin. Cool find. Color me surprised that you're not an editor yet.

Thanks
Don't know if I ought to be; I am not yet an expert in any particular group. Just soon to delve into the Diptera under Dr. S.A. Marshall.
