It Was
I only noticed it after it had been feeding for a few seconds and then - SMACK! I then got these pictures so I could find out what gave me such an annoying bite.

No-see-um.
Pretty sure this is actually a biting midge in the family Ceratopogonidae. Black flies are a little larger.
