Blackjacket male - Vespula consobrina
A striking example of how Yellowjacket males can be really confusing. The overall color pattern of this individual is virtually identical to the Northern (D. artica) male you "captured" last week.
I too noticed no difference at all until I looked at the two pictures under the large size, for a "routine" closer examination.
By then, the shortness of the malar space of the face, the shape of the white "humeral" stripes on the pronotum, and the relatively longer first abdominal tergite, made me realize it was a Vespula rather than a Dolichovespula.
