cant say why it would die but it doesnt look good.

 
Maybe he fell out of the tree
Maybe he fell out of the tree onto the pavement. It appeared to have some yellow stuff oozing out of its head. Or is that normal?

Probably normal
At least some swallowtail larvae have an organ that comes out when they're frightened: it gives off an unpleasant scent to scare off predators. I think that's what we have here.
