Masked Chafer? - Cyclocephala

Masked Chafer? - Cyclocephala
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
July 25, 2009
I grew up thinking these were called "june bugs", but I don't think they are. Pretty sure they're masked chafers, but which kind? Other than the annoying kind - how long do I have to tolerate their bumbling dive bombing? They're making it really unpleasant to photograph bugs at my lights now.

Why are they so inept? How have they not all been eaten into extinction by predators? Do they taste bad? Or is it just through sheer numbers?

Be glad
- ours suddenly stopped flying after a nice start of the season. I hope it's just that the monsoon is lagging and they and evrything else will start flying again with more rain.

Uh oh
But you can rest assured that the Virginia population will carry on, at least!
