Mantispid - Leptomantispa pulchella

Mantispid - Leptomantispa pulchella
Medford, Jackson County, Oregon, USA
July 26, 2009
Size: 12mm
Attracted to light. A favorite of mine and among the coolest family of insects. L. pulchella can be distinguished from other mantispid species by a combination of characters including brown or black antennae with a yellow basal segment, yellow legs, a mostly brown prothorax that is dorsally yellow except at the base, and a brown bar which is sometimes interrupted which crosses the vertex from eye to eye. This is also a smaller species with a more widespread distribution in North America than most other species. On a side note, I did allow the lacewing to escape from the clutches of this master predator.
