Ranatra fusca, R. kirkaldyi, and R. nigra
are the three species of Ranatra known to occur in MA. Unfortunately from there it's pretty difficult and usually requires close examination of the antennae (yes they do have them! They're just really tiny) and certain characters of the legs. If you can get your hand on the 1994 issue of Annals of the Entomological Society of America, there's an article in there by Sites and Polhemus called Nepidae of the United States and Canada that gives a good description of the species and defining characteristics.
