Katydid - Conocephalus brevipennis

Katydid - Conocephalus brevipennis
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
September 4, 2005
Oh my, I had no idea. I hope this crop is okay. I am kicking myself and learned a good lesson. I was playing with the camera thinking this was just something I already had numerous images of. Boy, was I wrong. Ouch! It looks like C. brevipennis to me also but what do I know. :)

Aha! Just got one too in NC
I just got an identical-looking male Conocephalus here in NC at my porch light. Photos to follow.

These are subtle. Cercus is broad and triangular on inside, with a point, and then has a big spatulate tip that curves outward. That looks conistent with the illustration of short-winged, I'll in-line that and some similar ones for comparison:
fasciatus brevipennis spartinae stictomerus

Hmm. Species photos, ranges, etc. linked from this page. I'm liking C. brevipennis. Or perhaps stictomerus? I don't see the big nob sticking up as shown in their illustration of stictomerus. I'll put together a composite with our photos and those illustrations, perhaps later in the week.

I concur.
C. brevipennis. Creating guide page.

You got one!
I have seen the other katydids at my porch light but not these. It seems I should have been paying more attention to them also. This is all so fascinating. Can't wait to see your images and the composite.
