Unknown Spider - Araneus diadematus

Unknown Spider - Araneus diadematus
Lake Forest, Lake County, Illinois, USA
September 9, 2005
Size: 3/4 " body (minus legs)
I noticed this large brown spider a few weeks ago and have been unable to identify it. It has spun a circular web approximately 24" in width and stretches between window panes on my back patio. It has white markings on its back. Can anyone identify this spider for me? Thank you! Eric

What do you think about
the possibility of Garden Spider - Araneus diadematus ?

Unknown Spider
John and Jane,
Thank you for the response. I think it's a winner. The coloring is slgihtly lighter than the one I have in the window. However, I bet that is pretty common. I had never seen a spider with this type of coloring and body size before, especially in the backyard. Its hunting has been succesful catching a few wasps and other insects in the large web. It's abdomen has increased 2x in size over the last few weeks.
Thank you,
E
