Sapygid Wasp in California - Eusapyga verticalis - male

Sapygid Wasp in California - Eusapyga verticalis - Male
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 6, 2009
Size: ~11 mm
I recently found myself going back through my older images and wondering about the identity of a handful of similar-looking yellow and black wasps that I had rescued from the pool over the last several months. When I discovered Hartmut Wisch's post for the Sapygid wasp, Eusapyga verticalis, I was pretty sure I had found a match. After some extended e-mail communication with Hartmut (and then also some very helpful input from Doug Yanega at UC Riverside), I am now certain that this wasp is indeed the same species. [A few of the other specimens, which I hope to post soon, are actually Sapyga angustata. The primary differentiating characteristic being the lack of tubercles on the vertex.] I owe much in the way of thanks to Hartmut for the time he spent educating and assisting me in coming to some conclusions about these wonderful, but relatively undiscussed wasps!
