Sciaridae - Fungus Gnat Maggots - maybe?

Sciaridae - Fungus Gnat Maggots - maybe?
Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, USA
July 7, 2009
Size: 2 inch column
Good day,
I'm seeking information regarding the "maggott mass" pictured.
I've contacted the U. of Mass. for assistance, they most graciously supplied in following:(7-27-09)
"The big mass is likely Sciaridae, or Fungus Gnats. "Dark winged Fungus Gnats" are known to travel like this and leave slime trails similar to slugs."

The image was taken about 8 a.m. on 7-7-09.
Additional information will be most helpful.
Thank you,
Ichnojoe.

Any idea what the big fat thing
smack in the middle of the column is?

Looks to me like
a larva of a house fly, or something similar. What it's doing mixed up with all these fungus gnats is another question!

There are a half dozen similar images
in the guide here, though we don't know how much more information they carry. We suggest trying the INFO tab and clicking on the similar images to read the comments there and see what you get.
