I don't think a species label
I don't think a species label can be put on this. It could also be C. liberta or C. fortis, and the distinguishing marks aren't visible.

why I think this is C. virginiensis
It lacks the coppery tinge in the punctured areas of the elytra and pronotum typical of C. liberta (http://entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu/choate/chalcophora1.htm) and C. fortis (http://insects.oeb.harvard.edu/mcz/FMPro?-DB=Image.fm&-Lay=web&-Format=images.htm&Species_ID=2649&-Find.

It has the deep frontal furrow of C. virginiensis (http://entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu/choate/chalcophora1.htm), and it is black with a whitish tinge in the punctured areas of the elytra and pronotum.

good to know---
but, for what it's worth, fortis in the guide looks quite different from above, and is apparently uncommon. Why the largest beetles are also the toughest to ID?

Chalcophora [?virginiensis]
wait for a 2nd op on species
