Red Admiral - reared from caterpillar - Vanessa atalanta

Red Admiral - reared from caterpillar - Vanessa atalanta
Beck Park, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 28, 2009
The adult butterfly emerged 8 days after pupating. I was still expecting a Painted Lady (Vanessa c@rdui) when it opened its wings...and then gasped and got out the camera.

Photographed in my multi-species lepidoptera-rearing enclosure; the plant is a sycamore leaf for tussock moth caterpillars.

For the underside of the wings, see its formerly-light-colored relative:

awesome series
These life cycle series are some of my favorites... I can't wait to get started on a few myself!

thanks, I really enjoy them!
I'm always rearing caterpillars in the summer anyway (lady beetles are new this year), and photographing them in an organized way made it even more interesting and helped me learn more than simply watching them mature. ("Hey, it's a butterfly all of a sudden! Um, when did it pupate, anyway?")
