High Drama: Robber Fly takes wasp - Laphria

High Drama: Robber Fly takes wasp - Laphria
Noonan, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
July 28, 2009
We were conducting an experiment at the Acadia Research Forest yesterday. I noticed a bumblebee messing around on the dirt slope. On closer look, it was a large fuzzy fly (possibly Lophria, a robber fly) wrestling with a large black wasp (possibly a Siricid). I took about 25 images of the two during which the fly took the wasp to 3 different locations. I just have time to post one now.

Id of both would be appreciated. I'm off to Halifax overnight but will return Thursday afternoon, when I can post another 2 images.

Edit 30Jul09: The above image was probably taken shortly after the fly took the wasp. See next two images for more info.

One other image in this series was moved to the prey page (horntail) - it is here:

Any chance of getting an id of the robber fly? The wasp has been id'd as Urocerus albicornis, a horntail.
